Wow. 2010 was a mad year. It’s taken me a whole month into the New Year to get my act together! My apologies that the posts have been few and far between. Last year was filled with travel for me – some 30K+ miles covered. Some for work, some for pleasure. As you know, we were in Amsterdam and London for our 2nd wedding anniversary. It was awesome! Between the two cities, I have to say that I preferred Amsterdam over London. I loved the fact that we could walk the entire city and really see the sights. It’s a charming city and the people were so lovely to us. We stayed a quaint B&B in the Jordaan. Every morning, our host would climb 3 treacherous flights (the stairwells were insane), carrying a tray of breakfast goodies. Superb!

After Europe, I traveled to NYC for the Brand New Conference. It was a smaller conference but they had some really good speakers. A small group of us went and we all left feeling very inspired – the creative juices flowing with new ideas and ventures. Then for Christmas, the hubs and I flew down to Mexico for a romantic holiday. It was just what the doctor ordered. Sun, sand, good book, pina coladas, margaritas and home-cooked Mexican meals. Ahhhh…. It was a good, but crazy year.

…and looking forward to all that 2011 holds for us.

Recently featured in Dwell magazine, this LivingHomes prefab home is truly fabulous! I. LOVE. IT. I love the use of recycled materials, energy-efficient solutions throughout and the minimal styling. It’s refreshing. Bravo.

Kim Grisco

Over the years, I’ve had the good fortune of meeting some fiercely talented people. Kim Grisco is one of those people. Kim and I met back in our college days at Cal State Fullerton and then ended up working together at the local art supply store (a great way to get a discount as starving art students). She and I both graduated with Graphic Design degrees, but her love of photography lead her to her bright and shining career as a fashion photographer, and the formation of her company Kim Grisco Photography. Her work is ethereal, ironic and just plain fun. And I’m still holding out hope that I’ll get to work with her on a project someday.

Kim is a native Angeleno (that’s a Los Angeles native, for those who haven’t heard the term) and a fun-loving gal who enjoys hiking in her beloved city and the art of falconry. Oh, did I mention she’s a total sweetheart too? She is.

A Gift for Mandi

How often to you get to share a birthday with a super-cool person? Not often right? Well, I do! So I wanted to make something special for my good friend, Miss Mandi. I’d been working on a trinket bowl for her, so I knew I needed to make something to put IN the bowl. (It’s kinda like giving a person a wallet. You’ve got to put money in it or it’s bad luck or something.) After going through my bead collection, I landed on some cool mother-of-pearl circles that were both modern and earthy. I paired these with silver discs to make a double-strand bracelet.

Of course, being the packaging-freak that I am, I had to make a bag for the bracelet to create a layered presentation. It’s the Japanese side of me. I was really pleased with how the bracelet turned out and Mandi seemed to like it too.

Think she’ll mind if I make one for myself?

Just had to share a meal that we made at home not long ago. A recipe that I received from a dear friend, who shall remain nameless because she is currently basking in the warm, Tuscan hillside. But I’m not bitter or anything.

I know to many of you cooks out there, this is OLD news, but I am not an avid cook – though I’m working on it – and to make something as lovely, tasty and simple as this blows me away. And my husband loved it. That means I can make it again!! Yay!

Spinach, mushroom and goat cheese tart served with arugula and heirloom tomatoes topped with a dijon vinaigrette.

Divine. Thanks for the recipe, Linguini!

HEATH

I recently traveled to the Bay area (on painfully short trip) and begged my husband to let me carve out some time to visit the HEATH factory store in Sausalito. And oh, was it worth it. As soon as we walked in the door, one of the gracious shop keepers saw my camera and said, “Feel free to take as many photographs as you’d like.” Ahh!! I was hoping I could take some shots, but certainly not expecting it. I almost couldn’t hold the camera because I was so excited!!

I just adore the HEATH aesthetic. The clean lines and earthy colors speak to me. I hope you enjoy the eye candy. Cheers!

Inspired Spaces

Whew. The holidays are over and it’s back to work. I have lots of yummy food shots to post soon, but before I do that I wanted to go ahead and post some creative inspiration for the new year, in the form of inspired spaces.

NOTE: the first house – and I can’t for the life of me remember where I originally saw these, so I apologize for the lack of sourcing – it is my DREAM house. I love the natural light, mix of woods, natural fibers and beautifully-curated pieces. So open, simple and elegant. I love the space plan and how the living room is separated from the kitchen area by the fireplace wall – which is also a usable space with daybed, reading light and storage overhead. LOVE. And don’t even get me started on those windows. As a artist, I crave spaces that allow for lots of natural light. I just wish I could afford one.

I guess you could say that my personal taste tends to be more masculine. I am definitely drawn to uncluttered living spaces that are both modern and classic, but warm at the same time. It is possible. I do, however, appreciate the those who can put their special mark on their space through textiles, wallpaper, collections and even just paint color. And of course, I love creative and festive studios, work spaces and children’s rooms where imagination and creativity can flourish.

BTW – yes, my husband and I are back in home-renovation-mode. Thanks to my dad and stepmom for offering their help, we will be starting with building a deck cover and installing a new entry door in the next few weeks (once delivered). I’m so excited! Then, it’s new tilework for the bathroom and kitchen and possibly refinished hardwoods! This summer, the exterior gets some color.
